Creating Tiered Membership Levels: Utilizing Private Channels and Roles

Learn to create a membership system by using private channels and configuring role access. This course will take a more advanced look at channels, roles, and role allocation.

TOPICS

✅ Role Allocation

Now that your roles have been set up, it’s time to allocate them to your community members. There are three ways in which roles can be allocated:

  • Manual Allocation
  • Login API
  • Gamification

Manual Allocation

As the name suggests, the first method involves manually assigning roles to each member. You can do this by heading into the user list of your community settings, selecting each member, and assigning them role(s).

If you have channel requests toggled on, when dealing with requests, each approved request will also prompt a pop-up modal that allows you to assign the necessary role to the member requesting access manually.

A manual approach might be appropriate if you have a smaller community or would like greater control over your members and their roles!

Login API

If you want an automated solution that integrates directly with your existing client platform, our Login API is the perfect fit. It streamlines role assignments by pulling data from your platform to assign roles to community members automatically when they join. For example, if a user is tagged as a VIP on your website, they’ll instantly receive a “VIP” role (or any custom role you choose) in your community upon login. This eliminates the need for manual assignments and encourages engagement on your client platform, as users see tangible rewards for their status.

Gamification

Roles can also be assigned using Returning.AI’s gamification features, allowing members to earn roles based on their activity within the community. With this method, members automatically unlock roles by reaching specific XP milestones. In the XP and Reward Configuration settings, you can view all your roles and set the XP requirements for each. By linking gamification to tiered roles, you can boost engagement as members are motivated to participate more actively in the community to achieve higher-tier roles and their associated benefits.

These methods can be used interchangeably to drive multiple membership systems and tiered incentives for your community. By combining these approaches, you can create a highly dynamic and flexible membership system. For example, you can assign roles based on activity through gamification while integrating roles from your client platform via the Login API. This allows you to offer tiered incentives that reward both external engagement on your platform and internal activity within the community, ensuring a balanced and engaging experience for all members.
