⚔️ Managing Community Misconduct

Rules and Disclaimers may keep members informed about behavioral guidelines within your community, but moderators often have the responsibility of ensuring that rules are followed. Thus, taking preemptive measures to prevent misconduct is the first step in keeping your community safe.

Controlling Entry and Messaging Permissions

Before we discuss Returning.AI’s moderation systems, let’s consider how you can easily tighten your community’s security.

One key aspect of keeping your community secure is ensuring potential scammers and malicious users don’t find their way into it or gain direct access to its members.

Having control over your invite links is one way of preventing random users from finding their way into your community. It also allows you to identify which invite link has been compromised. Every new member who joins has their IP address logged in the community’s audit log, so you’ll be able to detect suspicious new members easily.

Additionally, Returning.AI allows you to control direct messaging permissions for each role. Turning off the ability to direct message others on lower-level roles, such as @all, will prevent new users with the intent of scamming or poaching from sending malicious direct messages to your community members.

Preventing Misbehavior in Your Community

Returning.AI has safeguards in place to help you manage potential community misconduct, alleviating the workload brought on by the need to constantly monitor community chats to ensure messaging guidelines are being adhered to.

These systems are:

  • Profanity Filters
  • Banned Words
  • Alert Words

Profanity filters should be turned on to prevent rated content from being sent to your community. If you’d like to create exceptions or include specialized words that you would like restricted, Returning.AI displays the default list of profanities that can be edited when required.

Banned words fall in the category of words that aren’t technically profanities but still aren’t vocabulary that you’d like used in your community. This could include words with more negative connotations, competitor names, and more! Custom warning messages can be crafted and displayed to users when they attempt to send a message containing a banned word.

Alerts words are a particular category of misconduct management that tracks specific words used in your community. Whenever an alert word is used in a message, a notification will be sent to a private alert word channel that you and your moderators can access.

The following are ways in which you may wish to utilize alert words in your community:

  • Detecting words with negative sentiments, such as ‘scam’ or ‘refund,’ so that your customer support team can intervene to assist or mediate.
  • Detecting mentions of competitor names
  • Tracking topics associated with activity and engagement to monitor the frequency of conversations surrounding said topics. e.g., ‘early alpha,’ ‘new update,’ ‘event.’

Keeping your Community Safe

When rule-breakers are found, you’re equipped with the tools to immediately send out further warnings or ban them from your community.

The following actions against offenders can be taken:

  • Warn
  • Suspend
  • Ban

Warning Users

Issue the offender a warning. Perhaps not all offenders deserve an immediate suspension or ban. Use warnings to inform the offender of their wrongdoings and the consequences if they offend again.

Members will receive a notification containing the warning when it is issued. The number of times you can warn a single member is unlimited, and multiple warnings can be issued at any time.

Suspending Users

Temporarily suspend the offender’s access to your community. Suspensions prevent users from viewing and communicating in channels. This is a heavier punishment than simply a warning, but it is just short of removing them from your community entirely.

Suspensions can be issued over a set period. A suspended user trying to access a channel will simply be greeted with the reason for suspension. Suspensions are automatically revoked after the suspension period has ended but can also be manually revoked or extended at any time.

Banning Users

Permanently Ban the offender from your community. Doing so will prevent the user from accessing your community. Bans have no time limit but can be revoked at any time.
